Architecture & Interior Design in Utah

Matter is a Los Angeles architecture and interiors studio with built work in the Utah mountains. At Powder Mountain we designed a small-footprint retreat that sits lightly on the land — proof of how little space a beautiful, livable home really needs.

Building in the Utah mountains rewards restraint. The landscape is the main event, the seasons are demanding, and the best architecture touches the land lightly. We begin every project with a Discovery Session that translates how you live into a written Concept Brief, before a single line is drawn — so the result is specific to its site and to the way you want to live in it.

Our Mirror Gallery at Powder Mountain began as Matter's micro-house “Nest Concept,” a compact, mirror-clad retreat built for the Summit community and now living a second life as an art gallery. It is small-footprint architecture with an outsized idea — part of the experimental spirit that shaped Powder Mountain.

Every decision earns its place. Plans, materials, and daylight are drawn, tested, and refined; then we see the work through construction, detailing, and oversight — coordinating closely with local builders so distance never compromises the result. We design for the long term, and for the land it sits on.

Frequently asked

Do you work at Powder Mountain and across Utah?

Yes. Our Mirror Gallery is a built project at Powder Mountain, and we take on mountain and small-footprint work throughout the region.

How do you work on a project out of state?

We run the design from our Los Angeles studio and coordinate closely with local builders and consultants, with regular site presence through construction, so the oversight holds at a distance.

Do you design small-footprint and micro-homes?

Yes. Mirror Gallery is a micro-house prototype, and we love the discipline of small-footprint design — making a beautiful, fully livable home from very little space.
