Matter is a Los Angeles–based architecture and interiors studio working across California — from the Pacific Palisades and Malibu coast to Santa Barbara and Ojai, the Westside and the hills, and the Bay Area. We are inspired by the eclectic fabric and history of California, and we design homes and spaces rooted in your vision and the soul of your site.
California is our muse and our home. We draw on its vast natural landscapes and built identities — Spanish Revival, modern Mediterranean, mid-century, and the indoor-outdoor way of living the climate invites. We begin every project with a Discovery Session that translates how you live into a written Concept Brief, before a single line is drawn, so the design that follows is specific to your site and unmistakably yours.
Our work spans the state: ground-up homes in Pacific Palisades and Beverlywood, a Craftsman remodel in Pasadena, hospitality and retail in Santa Monica, and a mission-driven creative office for Solar Mosaic in Oakland. Whether on the coast or inland, the approach is the same — grounded, research-driven, and built to last.
Every decision earns its place. Plans, materials, and daylight are drawn, tested, and refined; then we see the work through construction, detailing, and oversight — until the space is real, resolved, and yours to live in for decades.
