Architecture & Interior Design in Ojai

Matter is a Los Angeles architecture and interiors studio designing homes across Ojai — in the East End, the Arbolada, Meiners Oaks, and the hills above the valley. We build houses that answer to this place: the oak groves, the long agrarian light, and the quiet the valley is known for.

Ojai rewards restraint. It is a valley of orchards and oaks, dark skies and slow afternoons, with a design tradition of its own. We begin every project with a Discovery Session that translates how you live into a written Concept Brief, before a single line is drawn. What follows is a home shaped to its land — low to the ground, open to the light and the hills, and built in materials that belong to the valley and only soften with time.

We design for how Ojai is actually lived: indoors and out as one, rooms that hold the morning and the pink-moment light at dusk, and room for gardens, groves, and gathering. We work within the town's architectural character and its rural setback and dark-sky considerations, interpreting requirements early so the design moves forward whole.

Every decision earns its place. Plans, materials, and daylight are drawn, tested, and refined; then we see the work through construction, detailing, and oversight — until the space is real, resolved, and yours to live in for decades. We are not designing houses to sell in a year, but homes for generations, meant to hold a family's life and leave something lasting behind.

Frequently asked

Do you design homes throughout the Ojai Valley?

Yes — the East End, the Arbolada, Meiners Oaks, and the hillsides, including agrarian parcels and view lots.

Do you design indoor-outdoor and agrarian homes?

Yes. We design homes that live with the land — orchards, gardens, courtyards, and rooms that open to the valley and its light.

What does working with Matter look like?

It begins with a Discovery Session that becomes a written Concept Brief. From there we move through design, and we stay involved through construction, detailing, and oversight.
