Matter is a Los Angeles architecture and interiors studio designing homes across Santa Monica — North of Montana, Sunset Park, Ocean Park, and the streets near the sand. We build for how the city actually lives: indoors and out, private on a close lot, and open to the ocean air.
Santa Monica rewards precision. Lots are generous near the coast and tight in the flats, the light is soft and marine, and the city holds its neighborhoods closely. We begin every project with a Discovery Session that translates how you live into a written Concept Brief, before a single line is drawn. What follows is a home tuned to its street — private where it needs to be, open where it can be, and detailed to meet the coastal air and grow more beautiful for it.
Our Santa Monica work runs from homes to the places around them. We designed Courtyard Kitchen and Montana Eyes here, and we bring the same care to residential work — reading the neighborhood, the light, and the way a family moves through a day. Near the coast, we design and document with the California Coastal Commission's requirements in mind from the first sketch.
Every decision earns its place. Plans, materials, and daylight are drawn, tested, and refined; then we see the work through construction, detailing, and oversight — until the space is real, resolved, and yours to live in for decades. We are not designing houses to sell in a year, but homes for generations, meant to hold a family's life and leave something lasting behind.
