Hollywood Hills

Architecture & Interior Design in the Hollywood Hills

Matter is a Los Angeles architecture and interiors studio designing homes across the Hollywood Hills — from the canyons of Laurel and Nichols to the ridgelines with the city at their feet. We build houses that make the most of a hard, beautiful site: the view, the privacy, and the light that turns the basin gold at dusk.

The Hills ask a great deal of a house. Lots are steep, access is tight, and the view is the whole point. We begin every project with a Discovery Session that translates how you live into a written Concept Brief, before a single line is drawn. What follows is a home drawn to its hillside — reaching for the view where it earns it, private where the road runs close, and detailed with the restraint the setting deserves.

We work fluently with the constraints particular to hillside building in Los Angeles — the Hillside Ordinance, grading and geology, access and fire requirements — interpreting them early and holding the design steady so approvals move without eroding the idea. The Hills carry a modern legacy; we build in that spirit without imitating it, shaping light, structure, and view into something quiet and specific to you.

Every decision earns its place. Plans, materials, and daylight are drawn, tested, and refined; then we see the work through construction, detailing, and oversight — until the space is real, resolved, and yours to live in for decades. We are not designing houses to sell in a year, but homes for generations, meant to hold a family's life and leave something lasting behind.

Frequently asked

Do you design homes throughout the Hollywood Hills?

Yes — from Laurel and Nichols Canyons to the ridgeline streets and view lots, including steep and hillside sites.

Do you work with hillside lots and the Hillside Ordinance?

Yes. Steep sites carry their own grading, geology, access, and fire requirements, and we design and document with the Hillside Ordinance in mind from the first sketch.

Do you design modern and contemporary homes?

Yes. The Hills suit a modern language, and we shape light, structure, and view into a home that is contemporary without imitating what came before.
