Solar Mosaic

Solar Mosaic is a creative office in Oakland, conceived as an inspiring, green home for a mission-driven clean-energy company — a daily reminder, as employees walk in, of their goal to create 100% clean energy for all people.

Matter designed the workplace around biophilia and daylight. Living walls and planting by Habitat Horticulture bring the outside in, while a democratic plan puts views and communal space at the center: private offices line the central corridor, and the open floor — not the corner office — gets the light. The result is a commercial interior that expresses the company's horizontal hierarchy in built form.

The office has been recognized as a model for sustainable, human-centered workplace design — a healthier, greener office that reflects what the company builds in the world.
