Luxury Residential Architecture in Los Angeles
Matter is a Los Angeles architecture and interiors studio designing ground-up custom homes and whole-house renovations across the city and the coast. We make houses that belong to their owners and their setting — rooted in your vision and the soul of your site.
A home is the most personal thing we design, and the most demanding. Our residential clients are building for the long term — a primary residence, a family home, a place meant to hold a life for decades. We take that seriously, and we stay involved from the first conversation to the last detail.
Every project begins with Discovery: a deliberate first act that translates how you live into a written Concept Brief, before a single line is drawn. In Design, plans, materials, and daylight are shaped around your vision and the soul of your site — drawn, tested, and refined until every decision earns its place. In Execution, we see the work through construction, detailing, craft, and oversight — until the space is real, resolved, and yours to live in for decades. One studio, one point of view, the whole way through.
We work in ground-up single-family homes, hillside and view lots, coastal properties, and considered renovations — as well as post-fire rebuilds across Los Angeles. Recent residential work includes the Mount Holyoke Rebuild, the Castellammare Rebuild, and the Galloway Rebuild in Pacific Palisades, the Courtyard House in Beverlywood, and the Durango House.

What kinds of residential projects do you take on?
Ground-up custom single-family homes, hillside and coastal properties, whole-house renovations, and post-fire rebuilds across Los Angeles and the surrounding coast.
Do you handle both architecture and interiors?
Yes. We design architecture and interiors together as one studio, so the building and the spaces within it are resolved as a single idea rather than handed off.
How does a project begin?
With a Discovery Session — a structured first conversation that becomes a written Concept Brief. It aligns budget, program, and intent before design begins, so the work that follows is specific to you.
